In the wee hours this morning, Jack squared off against fellow American Ben Wilwerth in the fourth round of the ITF World Junior Championships. Jack needed a win have a chance to advance to the semi-final round of the top four players.
Jack played some of his best tennis in the opening set, dominating Ben with big aces and several brilliant passing shots, taking the set 6-1.
After he broke Ben's serve to open the second set, he appeared to be well on his way to victory, but then hit a bump. Ben found his footing and broke back, and as Jack began to struggle a bit, the rain came, forcing a 20-minute delay. Try as he might after the delay, Jack could not regain his early momentum, and with Ben serving much better, Jack lost the second set 6-3, to force a third and deciding set.
Ben continued to play well, but hung in. He went down 4-3, and Ben had him on the ropes, but Jack rallied to take the game and even the set at 4-4. As he has done so often this year, Jack then dug deep and took the next two games in grand style to win the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Jack remains in the running for the semi-finals. His fate will depend on the outcome of the match between Roig and Schoenhaus, which is now in a third set. I'll let you know how it turns out......
LET's GO, JACK!
